Florida King Peach (Prunus persica 'Florida King')
Florida King Peach is a low-chill, fast-growing, deciduous fruit tree that produces large, firm, yellow-fleshed peaches with a red blush. This variety is specially bred for warm climates and is known for its early ripening (typically in May or June). It has a sweet, juicy flavor and is excellent for fresh eating, baking, and canning. In early spring, it blooms with showy pink flowers, attracting pollinators before leafing out.
Growing Zones:
- USDA Hardiness Zones: 7–9
- Requires 400–450 chill hours (ideal for the Gulf Coast)
- Recommended by LUS AgCenter
Height and Width:
- Mature Height: 15–20 feet
- Mature Spread: 10–15 feet
Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily).
- Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–6.5. Avoid heavy clay or poorly draining soil.
- Watering: Regular watering, especially during fruit development. Reduce watering in winter.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring and summer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce fruiting.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain an open canopy (vase shape) for airflow and sun penetration, which improves fruit quality.
- Pollination: Self-pollinating, but planting another peach variety nearby can improve yields.
Uses:
- Fresh Eating: Sweet and juicy, perfect for eating straight off the tree.
- Cooking & Baking: Great for making pies, cobblers, and preserves.
- Canning & Freezing: Holds up well in preserves and frozen storage.
- Wildlife Attraction: Flowers attract pollinators, and fallen fruit may attract birds and small mammals.
Native Range:
- Peaches (Prunus persica) originated in China but were introduced to North America centuries ago.
- Florida King was specifically developed for the warm climates of the Southeastern U.S.
