Evolvulus Compact Blue Daze

Evolvulus Compact Blue Daze

Plant name: Evolvulus Compact Blue Daze

Scientific name: Evolvulus glomeratus

Plant description:
Evolvulus Compact Blue Daze is a low-growing, heat-tolerant perennial prized for its silver foliage and continuous blue flowers. This compact selection forms a dense, spreading mound that works well as a groundcover or spiller in containers. Its fine texture and steady bloom habit provide consistent color in sunny plantings throughout the warm season.

Flower description:
Flowers are small, true blue with a soft white eye at the center. Each bloom typically opens in the morning and may close by late afternoon, with new flowers appearing daily. Under warm conditions, the plant produces a steady display of blooms across the foliage canopy.

Leaf description:
Leaves are narrow, oval to slightly elongated, and covered with fine hairs that give them a soft, silvery-gray appearance. The foliage forms a tight mat, providing strong contrast against the vivid blue flowers.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen perennial in frost-free climates; grown as a seasonal annual in cooler regions.

USDA grow zones:
USDA Zones 8–11 outdoors; commonly grown as an annual in colder climates.

Mature height and width:
Typically 6–12 inches tall and 12–18 inches wide, forming a compact, spreading mound.

Landscape uses:
Well suited for groundcover, edging, rock gardens, hanging baskets, window boxes, and mixed containers. Its trailing habit makes it effective as a spiller plant, while its dense growth provides even coverage in sunny beds.

Native range:
Native to Brazil and parts of South America.

Sun exposure:
Performs best in full sun. Strong light encourages dense growth and consistent flowering. Reduced light can lead to fewer blooms and looser growth.

Water requirements:
Prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but flowers best with consistent moisture. Avoid poorly drained soils that remain saturated.

Pests and problems:
Generally low maintenance with few serious pest issues. Overwatering may lead to root problems. Poor drainage and excessive shade can reduce vigor and flowering.

Heat and sun tolerance: Cold tolerance:
Exhibits strong heat tolerance and maintains bloom production in hot weather. Sensitive to frost and freezing temperatures, which can cause foliage damage and plant decline.

Growing tips:
Plant in well-drained soil with good air circulation. Light trimming during the growing season can encourage branching and maintain a compact shape. Avoid excessive fertilization, as overly rich soil may reduce flowering. Position in the sunniest available location to maximize bloom production and maintain the plant’s tight, silvery mound.
