Dorotheanthus bellidiformis 'Variegated' (Variegated Livingstone Daisy)

Plant Description

Dorotheanthus bellidiformis 'Variegated', commonly known as Variegated Livingstone Daisy, Ice Plant or Mezoo, is a low-growing, spreading succulent with fleshy, trailing stems and eye-catching variegated green and creamy-white foliage. Ice Plant produces bright, daisy-like flowers in shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, or white, typically opening in full sunlight. Ice Plant is drought-tolerant and thrives in dry, sandy conditions, making it an excellent ground cover or container plant.

Native Range

Native to South Africa, where it grows in arid, sandy, and rocky habitats.

USDA Hardiness Zones

Zones: 9–11 (Can be grown as an annual in cooler climates)

Size

Height: 4–6 inches tall
Width: 12–24 inches wide (spreading habit)

Light Requirements

Prefers full sun. More sunlight enhances flowering and keeps the foliage compact and vibrant.

Soil Requirements

Well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil with low organic matter. Tolerates poor soils but prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Avoid heavy, clayey soils that retain too much moisture.

Watering Needs

Drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Humidity & Temperature

Thrives in warm temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Sensitive to frost—protect or grow as an annual in colder zones.
Prefers dry air and does not require high humidity.

Fertilization

Minimal fertilization needed. Apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) once at planting and optionally during the growing season for better flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce blooms.

Uses

Ground Cover: Spreads quickly to form a dense, colorful mat.

Rock Gardens: Ideal for dry, rocky landscapes.

Containers & Hanging Baskets: Trailing habit makes it perfect for cascading over edges.

Erosion Control: Helps stabilize sandy or loose soils.

Drought-Tolerant Landscapes: Suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens.

Pest & Disease Management

Rarely affected by pests, but watch for aphids or mealybugs in humid conditions. Treat with neem oil if needed. Root rot can occur if soil stays too wet—ensure proper drainage.
Avoid excessive shade, as it can lead to weak growth and fewer flowers.
