USDA Growing Zones

Perennial in Zones: 8–11

Annual in Zones: 3–7 (can be overwintered indoors by storing rhizomes)

Size (Height & Width)

Height: 24–36 inches

Spread: 18–24 inches

Growing Conditions

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun (6–8 hours daily) for optimal flowering.  Can tolerate partial sun, but blooming may be reduced.

Soil:  Requires rich, well-draining soil with good moisture retention.  Ideal pH range: 6.0–6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

WateringNeeds consistent moisture, especially in hot weather. Benefits from mulching to retain soil moisture.

Temperature & Humidity:  Thrives in warm, humid conditions.  Sensitive to frost; rhizomes should be lifted in zones 3–7 and stored indoors for winter.

FertilizationApply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or 12-4-8) every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.  A phosphorus-rich fertilizer promotes more blooms.

OverwinteringIn colder zones, dig up rhizomes after the first frost and store them in peat moss or dry soil at 50°F (10°C).  Replant in spring after the danger of frost has passed.

Pest & Disease Management:

Common pests: Aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles—use neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Diseases: Fungal leaf spots and rust—avoid overhead watering and ensure good air circulation.

Uses in the Landscape & Home

Garden Beds & Borders: Provides a bold, tropical look.

Containers & Patio Planters: Perfect for small gardens and urban spaces.

Pollinator Gardens: Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Water Gardens & Boggy Areas: Tolerates moist conditions near ponds or streams.
