Growing Conditions

Light Requirements:  Prefers full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best flowering.  Can tolerate partial sun, but fewer blooms may develop.

SoilRequires rich, well-draining soil with good moisture retention.  Ideal pH range: 6.0–6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

Watering:  Needs consistent moisture, especially in hot weather.  Benefits from a 2-inch layer of mulch to retain soil moisture.

Temperature & Humidity:  Thrives in warm, humid climates.  Sensitive to frost; tubers should be lifted in zones 3–7 before winter.

FertilizationApply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or 12-4-8) every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.  A phosphorus-rich fertilizer encourages more blooms.

Overwintering:  In colder zones, dig up rhizomes after the first frost.  Store in peat moss or dry soil at 50°F (10°C) for winter dormancy.

Pest & Disease Management:

Common pests: Aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles—treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Diseases: Watch for fungal leaf spots or rust—avoid overhead watering.

Uses in the Landscape & Home

Garden Beds & Borders: Adds a bold, tropical look.

Containers & Patio Planters: Ideal for small spaces and urban gardens.

Pollinator Gardens: Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Water Gardens & Boggy Areas: Can tolerate moist conditions near ponds.
