Candy Kisses Hemizygia
Candy Kisses Hemizygia
Candy Kisses Hemizygia (Hemizygia petiolata) is a compact, evergreen perennial known for its soft, silvery-green leaves and masses of pale lavender-pink tubular flowers that bloom from spring through fall. Its velvety foliage provides a beautiful contrast to darker greens in the garden, and its long bloom season makes it a favorite for attracting bees and butterflies. The plant maintains a neat, mounding habit and adds a subtle shimmer to sunny garden beds.
Grow Zone:
Best suited for USDA Zones 9–11. In Zone 9, it behaves as a semi-tender perennial that may die back lightly in winter but will regrow once temperatures warm in spring.
Height and Width:
Reaches about 12 to 18 inches tall and spreads 18 to 24 inches wide, forming a low, rounded mound.
Uses:
Excellent for borders, containers, rock gardens, and pollinator plantings. Its silvery foliage complements colorful annuals and tropicals. Works well in mixed landscape designs, where it provides a cooling contrast and texture.
Native Range:
Native to South Africa, where it thrives in warm, sunny conditions with well-drained soil.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soil. Water moderately—allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Avoid overly wet conditions, which can cause root rot. Once established, it becomes moderately drought-tolerant.
Zone 9 Tips:
In Zone 9, plant in a sunny to lightly shaded location with good air circulation. Mulch lightly in winter to protect the roots from occasional cold snaps. During extended dry or hot periods, provide supplemental water to maintain blooming. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the shape compact and encourage new growth. Plant near reflective surfaces like walls or walkways to enhance its silvery tone and promote warmth during cool months.
