Plant description: Calathea ‘Zebrina’ is a striking tropical foliage plant admired for its bold leaf pattern and upright growth habit. This clumping perennial grows from rhizomes and produces tall, arching stems that create a layered, architectural presence indoors or in sheltered outdoor settings. Known as the Zebra Plant, it is valued for its refined texture and rhythmic movement as leaves respond to changing light throughout the day.

Flower description: Flowers are small and often hidden within low, cone-like inflorescences near the base of the plant. While blooming may occur under ideal conditions, Calathea ‘Zebrina’ is primarily cultivated for its dramatic foliage rather than floral display.

Leaf description: Large, velvety leaves feature alternating light and dark green striping that resembles a zebra pattern. The leaf surface has a soft matte texture, while the undersides often show a subtle purplish tone. Leaves are oval-shaped with pronounced veins, adding strong visual structure to shaded plant collections.

Deciduous or evergreen: Evergreen in warm climates and as an indoor plant when protected from cold conditions.

USDA grow zones: 10–11 outdoors; widely grown indoors across all regions.

Mature height and width: Typically grows 2–3 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide when mature, forming a full, upright clump.

Landscape uses: Ideal for indoor containers, shaded patios, tropical-themed plantings, and humid environments such as bathrooms or conservatories. Works well as a statement foliage plant in modern interiors and layered plant displays.

Native range: Native to tropical regions of Brazil and parts of South America.

Sun exposure: Bright, indirect light is preferred. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can fade or scorch the patterned foliage.

Water requirements: Requires evenly moist soil with good drainage. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings while maintaining consistent humidity around the plant.

Pests and problems: Can be sensitive to low humidity, leading to leaf curling or browning edges. Watch for spider mites, fungus gnats, or mealybugs, especially in dry indoor conditions. Mineral buildup from hard water may cause leaf spotting or discoloration.

Heat and sun tolerance: Prefers warm, stable temperatures and performs best away from hot, drying drafts or intense direct sunlight. Cold tolerance: Sensitive to cold exposure; temperatures below 55°F may slow growth or cause foliage damage.

Growing tips: Use a loose, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter to support healthy roots. Maintain higher humidity by grouping plants together or placing them near a humidifier. Rotate containers periodically to encourage even growth and maintain the upright habit. Water with filtered or room-temperature water when possible to reduce mineral stress on the foliage. Keep leaves clean by gently wiping away dust to maintain the bold striping that makes Calathea ‘Zebrina’ a standout foliage plant.
