Calathea 'Zebrina'
Calathea 'Zebrina'
Calathea zebrina (Zebra Plant)
Plant Description:
Calathea zebrina, commonly known as the Zebra Plant, is a tropical evergreen perennial admired for its striking foliage. The broad, velvety leaves are marked with alternating light and dark green stripes that resemble zebra patterns, while the undersides are a rich purple. The plant forms dense clumps of upright leaves on long petioles, creating a lush, decorative display perfect for indoor environments or shaded garden spaces.
Grow Zone:
Best grown in USDA Zones 10–12. In Zone 9, it should be treated as a container plant that can be moved indoors during cooler months.
Height and Width:
Typically reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide under ideal conditions.
Uses:
Popular as a houseplant due to its vibrant foliage and tolerance for lower light conditions. It’s ideal for tabletops, shaded patios, and interior plant groupings where humidity can be maintained. Outdoors, it can be used as an understory or tropical accent plant in shaded garden beds.
Native Range:
Native to southeastern Brazil, where it grows naturally on the forest floor in warm, humid, and shaded environments.
Sun and Water Requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade; direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, using well-draining, peat-rich potting mix. Maintain high humidity and moderate temperatures, avoiding cold drafts or dry air.
