Caladium 'Pink Panther'

Plant Description

Caladium 'Pink Panther' is a striking fancy-leaf caladium variety with vibrant pink leaves, speckled with darker pink and red flecks, and edged with a thin green border. Its unique coloration and compact growth make it a standout choice for shady gardens, containers, and indoor displays.

Native Range

Caladiums originate from the tropical forests of South America, primarily in Brazil, where they thrive as understory plants in warm, humid environments.

USDA Growing Zones

Perennial in Zones: 9–11

Annual in Zones: 3–8 (can be overwintered indoors)

Size (Height & Width)

Height: 12–18 inches

Spread: 12–18 inches

Growing Conditions

Light RequirementsPrefers partial to full shade, but can tolerate some morning sun.  Too much direct sunlight may scorch the delicate leaves.

SoilRequires rich, well-draining, organic soil.  Ideal pH range: 5.5–6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

WateringNeeds consistent moisture but should not sit in standing water.  Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly before rewatering.

Temperature & HumidityThrives in warm, humid conditions.  Minimum soil temperature of 70°F (21°C) is required for tuber sprouting.  Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Fertilization:  Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) at planting.  Feed biweekly with a diluted liquid fertilizer during the growing season.

MulchingA 2-inch layer of mulch helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Overwintering:  In zones 3–8, lift tubers before the first frost. Let them dry for a few days and store in peat moss or dry soil at 55°F (13°C).

Uses in the Landscape

Shaded Borders & Beds: Adds a bright pop of color in shady areas.

Containers & Hanging Baskets: Ideal for patios and porches.

Indoor Plant: Can be grown indoors with proper humidity and indirect light.

Mixed Plantings: Pairs well with ferns, hostas, and impatiens for a lush, tropical effect.
