Plant Description
Caladium 'Fannie Munson' is a striking tropical foliage plant prized for its large, heart-shaped, pink leaves with deep rose veins and a subtle green margin. This cultivar is a classic fancy-leaved caladium, known for its vibrant color and dramatic presence in gardens or containers.
Native Range
Caladiums are native to the tropical forests of South America, primarily in Brazil.
USDA Growing Zones
Hardiness Zones: 9–11 (perennial)
Zones 3–8: Can be grown as an annual or dug up and stored for winter dormancy.
Size (Height & Width)
Height: 18–24 inches
Spread: 12–18 inches
Growing Conditions
Light Requirements: Best in partial shade to full shade, though some morning sun is tolerated. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining, organic soil with good moisture retention. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–6.5) is ideal.
Watering: Requires consistent moisture but should not be waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid conditions. Minimum soil temperature of 70°F (21°C) is needed for tuber sprouting. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) at planting. eed biweekly with diluted liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
Mulching: A 2-inch layer of mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.
Overwintering: In colder zones, lift the tubers before the first frost, dry them for a few days, and store them in peat moss or dry soil at 55°F (13°C).
Uses in the Landscape
Borders & Bedding: Brightens up shaded garden beds.
Containers & Hanging Baskets: Great for patios and balconies.
Indoor Plant: Can be grown indoors with sufficient humidity and indirect light.
Accent Planting: Works well in mixed tropical plantings.
