Butterfly Bush, Nanho Blue (Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Blue')

Description:

Nanho Blue is a deciduous shrub known for its fragrant, elongated clusters of blue-purple flowers that bloom from summer to fall. The flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators, making it a popular choice for pollinator gardens. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and green to gray-green, providing a lush backdrop to the vibrant blooms.

Growing Conditions:

- Grow Zones: 5-9

- Height: 3 to 4 feet

- Width: 4 to 5 feet

Planting and Care:

- Soil: Well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral pH.

- Light: Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

- Water: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering is beneficial during the first growing season.

- Pruning: Prune back in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and maintain shape.

Uses:

- Ideal for borders, butterfly gardens, and wildlife habitats.

- Can be used in mixed shrub borders or as a specimen plant.

- The flowers are great for cut arrangements and attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Native Range:

Buddleia davidii is native to China but has become widely naturalized in many parts of the United States. The cultivar 'Nanho Blue' retains the ornamental traits of its parent species while offering a compact size suitable for smaller gardens.

 Additional Tips:

- Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) can encourage more flowers and prolong the blooming period.

- Monitor for aphids and spider mites, which can occasionally be problematic.

- Consider placing it in a location where it can freely spread its seeds, as it can become invasive in some regions.
