Bulbine Orange

Bulbine Orange

Plant name: Bulbine Orange

Scientific name: Bulbine frutescens (orange-flowering selection)

Plant description: Bulbine Orange is a low-growing, succulent perennial valued for its long blooming season and drought-tolerant nature. This plant forms loose clumps of narrow foliage and sends up airy flower spikes that add movement and color to dry gardens and contemporary landscapes. Its adaptable growth habit makes it suitable for edging, rock gardens, and containers where reliable color is needed with minimal maintenance.

Flower description: Slender stems rise above the foliage carrying clusters of star-shaped orange flowers with contrasting yellow stamens. Blooms open sequentially along the spike, extending the flowering period and providing a continuous source of nectar for pollinators. The bright orange tones stand out against gravel, stone, and neutral plant palettes.

Leaf description: Foliage consists of fleshy, cylindrical leaves arranged in soft clumps at the base. Leaves are medium green and slightly succulent, helping the plant tolerate dry conditions while maintaining a tidy, grassy appearance.

Deciduous or evergreen: Evergreen to semi-evergreen in mild climates; may experience dieback after frost or extended cold.

USDA grow zones: 9–11

Mature height and width: Flower spikes typically reach 12–18 inches tall, with foliage spreading 18–24 inches wide.

Landscape uses: Ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, border edges, containers, and mass plantings in low-water landscapes. Works well alongside succulents, ornamental grasses, and other sun-loving perennials. Also useful for erosion control on slopes due to its clumping growth habit.

Native range: Southern Africa.

Sun exposure: Full sun to light partial sun. Strong light promotes compact growth and increased flowering.

Water requirements: Low to moderate. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency once plants are rooted. Well-drained soil is essential to prevent root stress.

Pests and problems: Generally resistant to pests and diseases. Overly wet soil can lead to root rot or reduced vigor. Occasional aphids may appear on flower stems but rarely cause lasting damage.

Heat and sun tolerance: Highly tolerant of intense heat, reflective surfaces, and bright sun exposure once established. Cold tolerance: Light frost tolerant; prolonged freezing temperatures can damage foliage and crowns.

Growing tips: Plant Bulbine Orange in sandy or gritty soil to improve drainage and encourage strong root development. Avoid heavy mulches that retain excessive moisture around the base. Trim spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy and promote continued blooming. In container plantings, use a fast-draining mix and position where the plant receives several hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering performance.
