Bird of Paradise "Orange"

Bird of Paradise "Orange"

Plant name: Bird of Paradise “Orange”

Scientific name: Strelitzia reginae

Plant description: Bird of Paradise “Orange” is a bold, clump-forming tropical perennial prized for its sculptural foliage and iconic flowers. This species grows from thick underground rhizomes that produce upright fans of leaves, creating a dramatic architectural presence in landscapes and containers. Its structured habit makes it a strong focal point in modern plantings, resort-style gardens, and indoor spaces with ample light.

Flower description: The signature blooms resemble an exotic bird in flight, featuring vivid orange sepals and bright blue petals emerging from a beak-like bract. Flowers appear on sturdy stems above the foliage and hold well as cut flowers. Mature plants produce multiple blooms during the warmer months when grown in favorable conditions.

Leaf description: Leaves are large, paddle-shaped, and leathery with a rich green color and pronounced midrib. Foliage grows in an upright fan, adding a tropical texture that remains visually striking even when the plant is not in flower.

Deciduous or evergreen: Evergreen in warm climates and when grown indoors; may slow growth or experience leaf damage during prolonged cold exposure.

USDA grow zones: 9–11 outdoors; commonly grown as a container or houseplant in cooler climates.

Mature height and width: Typically reaches 3–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide in the landscape; container-grown plants may remain slightly smaller depending on space and care.

Landscape uses: Effective as a statement plant in entryways, patios, poolside plantings, and tropical borders. Works well in large decorative containers, indoor atriums, and minimalist garden designs where bold foliage is desired.

Native range: Coastal regions of South Africa.

Sun exposure: Full sun to bright partial sun outdoors; indoors, provide the brightest available light for strong growth and flowering.

Water requirements: Moderate, consistent moisture during active growth. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler periods when growth slows.

Pests and problems: Generally resilient but may attract spider mites, scale insects, or mealybugs, especially in indoor environments with low humidity. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root issues and yellowing foliage.

Heat and sun tolerance: Highly tolerant of intense heat and strong sun once acclimated. Leaves remain durable in bright conditions with adequate moisture. Cold tolerance: Sensitive to freezing temperatures; frost may damage foliage and prolonged cold can injure the crown.

Growing tips: Use a well-drained potting mix or garden soil that allows airflow around the roots. Bird of Paradise “Orange” blooms more reliably when mature and slightly crowded at the root zone. Feed with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to encourage strong foliage and flower production. Wipe leaves periodically to remove dust indoors and position plants where they receive several hours of direct light each day for best performance.
