Begonia ‘Lois Burke’ is a stunning rhizomatous begonia known for its unique foliage and ornamental appeal. Its leaves are typically large, asymmetrical, and exhibit striking colors, often featuring deep green, bronze, or burgundy tones with a metallic sheen. This variety thrives as a houseplant or in shaded outdoor gardens, offering both foliage beauty and occasional delicate pink or white blooms.

Growing Zones:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-11 (Can be grown as a houseplant or annual in cooler zones)

Mature Size:

  • Height: 12-18 inches

  • Width: 12-24 inches

Growing Conditions:

  • Sunlight: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade; avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Soil: Well-draining, light, and airy soil; a mix of peat, perlite, and compost works well.

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy; allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity; misting or placing near a humidity tray can be beneficial.

  • pH Preference: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).

  • Fertilization: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to fall).

Uses in Landscaping & Indoors:

  • Shade Gardens: Excellent for adding texture and color to shaded garden beds.

  • Houseplant: Ideal for indoor growing due to its tolerance for lower light conditions.

  • Container Planting: Grows well in pots and hanging baskets.

  • Terrariums & Greenhouses: Thrives in controlled humidity environments.

Native Range:

Begonias are native to tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. While ‘Lois Burke’ is a cultivated variety, it shares characteristics with other rhizomatous begonias found in these regions.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Avoid overwatering, as rhizomatous begonias are prone to root rot.

  • Pinch back leggy stems to encourage a fuller growth habit.

  • Repot every couple of years to refresh soil and provide space for growth.

  • Protect from cold drafts if grown indoors.
