Ballerina Datura 'Yellow' (also known as Datura metel 'Ballerina Yellow') is a striking variety of Datura, commonly referred to as Devil's Trumpet or Angel's Trumpet. This cultivar is known for its large, trumpet-shaped, double or triple-layered yellow flowers that have a unique spiral formation. The flowers are highly fragrant, especially during the evening, attracting pollinators like moths. The plant has large, dark green, lobed leaves and a bushy growth habit, making it a beautiful addition to gardens and landscapes.

Plant Characteristics:

- Flower Color: Bright yellow with a double or triple layered, ruffled appearance

- Foliage: Large, dark green, lobed leaves

- Growth Habit: Upright, bushy perennial or annual, depending on the climate

Native Range:

Datura species are native to the Americas, with Datura metel believed to originate from Asia. It has been widely cultivated and naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions around the world.

USDA Hardiness Zones:

- Best suited for zones 9-11 as a perennial. In cooler zones, it is typically grown as an annual due to its sensitivity to frost.

Height and Width:

- Height: 2-4 feet (60-120 cm)

- Width: 2-3 feet (60-90 cm)

Light Requirements:

- Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) promotes the best flowering and growth. However, it can tolerate some afternoon shade, especially in hot climates.

Soil Requirements:

- Thrives in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A soil mix that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0) is ideal.

- Adding compost or well-rotted manure to the soil before planting can help provide the necessary nutrients and improve soil structure.

Watering:

- Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure good drainage.

- In hot or dry conditions, water more frequently to maintain moisture levels, but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Temperature and Humidity:

- Prefers warm temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C). It is sensitive to cold and will not tolerate frost, so it should be protected or brought indoors if temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).

- Datura 'Yellow' can tolerate average humidity levels but thrives best in environments that are not overly humid.

Fertilization:

- Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Repeat fertilization in mid-summer for continuous flowering.

- Alternatively, use a water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season for optimal results.

Pruning and Maintenance:

- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms and maintain a neat appearance.

- Prune back any leggy or damaged growth to encourage a bushier form and prevent the plant from becoming too sprawling.

- In colder climates, treat Datura 'Yellow' as an annual, or bring it indoors before the first frost to overwinter as a container plant.

Propagation:

- Can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. Seeds should be sown indoors in early spring or directly outdoors after the last frost.

- Softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer can root successfully when placed in moist, well-draining soil.

Caution:

- All parts of the Datura plant are highly toxic if ingested. It contains alkaloids that can cause serious poisoning in humans and animals. Handle with care, wear gloves when pruning or handling, and keep away from children and pets.

 Uses

- Ornamental Gardens: Perfect for adding a tropical flair and a dramatic focal point to garden beds, borders, and landscapes. Its large, fragrant flowers and lush foliage create a striking visual impact.

- Night Gardens: The fragrant blooms of Datura 'Yellow' make it an excellent choice for moon gardens or areas where its scent can be enjoyed in the evening.

- Containers: Suitable for growing in large containers or pots, allowing easy mobility and overwintering in cooler climates.

- Pollinator Gardens: Attracts nocturnal pollinators such as moths, making it a good addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.

By providing the proper care and growing conditions, Ballerina Datura 'Yellow' can thrive, producing its stunning, fragrant blooms throughout the growing season, adding exotic beauty and fragrance to any garden space.
