Encore® Azalea Autumn Royalty® PP#10580

Scientific name: Rhododendron ‘Royalty’

Encore® Azalea Autumn Royalty® is a reblooming evergreen azalea recognized for its deep purple flower color, compact habit, and extended bloom season. Developed as part of the Encore® series, this cultivar provides repeat flowering and improved sun tolerance compared to traditional azaleas, offering consistent color across multiple seasons.

Plant description:
Royalty® grows as a dense, rounded shrub with strong branching and a naturally uniform form. Its manageable size and tidy structure make it well suited for both structured landscapes and more relaxed garden settings.

Flower description:
Blooms are rich royal purple with saturated tones that remain strong through repeated bloom cycles. A heavy spring display is followed by additional flowering in summer and fall, extending color far beyond the typical azalea season. The bold flower color creates contrast and depth in mixed plantings.

Leaf description:
Foliage is glossy, dark green, and evergreen, providing year-round structure and a refined backdrop for the vivid blooms. New growth emerges lighter green before maturing into a deeper shade.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 7–10.

Mature height and width:
Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for foundation plantings, low hedges, mass plantings, mixed shrub borders, accent plantings, and large containers. Its strong color and compact form make it effective as a focal plant or repeated throughout the landscape for visual cohesion.

Native range:
Not native. This hybrid azalea was developed from Asian evergreen azalea species.

Sun exposure:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Adequate sun exposure supports stronger reblooming and fuller growth.

Water requirements:
Moderate. Prefers evenly moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Consistent moisture is important, particularly during establishment and prolonged dry periods.

Pests and problems:
Potential issues include azalea lace bugs, spider mites, root rot in poorly drained soils, and nutrient deficiencies in alkaline conditions. Proper site selection and soil preparation reduce most problems.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Demonstrates good heat tolerance and maintains foliage quality under increased sun exposure compared to traditional azaleas.

Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to approximately -10°F once established, with dependable performance throughout its recommended growing range.

Growing tips:
Plant in acidic, organic-rich soil with excellent drainage. Mulch to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from the base of the plant. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. If pruning is necessary, prune immediately after the main spring bloom to preserve future flowering cycles. Apply a fertilizer formulated for azaleas to maintain rich foliage color and encourage repeat blooming.
