Azalea, Encore® Autumn Rouge® PP# 10438

Encore® Azalea Autumn Rouge® PP#10438

Scientific name: Rhododendron ‘Rouge’

Encore® Azalea Autumn Rouge® is a reblooming evergreen azalea valued for its saturated red flower color, compact habit, and extended bloom season. Developed within the Encore® series, this cultivar offers repeat flowering and improved tolerance to sun exposure, providing dependable color across multiple seasons.

Plant description:
Rouge® forms a dense, rounded shrub with strong branching and a naturally balanced shape. Its compact growth habit allows it to fit easily into both formal plantings and relaxed garden designs with minimal maintenance.

Flower description:
Blooms are rich, deep red with a velvety appearance that holds its color well in the landscape. A heavy spring flowering is followed by repeat bloom cycles in summer and fall, extending visual interest long after traditional azaleas have finished. The intense color creates a strong focal point in borders and foundation plantings.

Leaf description:
Foliage is glossy, dark green, and evergreen, providing year-round structure and contrast. New growth emerges lighter green before maturing into a darker, polished finish.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 7–10.

Mature height and width:
Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide.

Landscape uses:
Ideal for foundation plantings, low hedges, mass plantings, mixed shrub borders, accent plantings, and large containers. Its bold flower color makes it effective as a focal plant or as a repeating element in color-driven landscape designs.

Native range:
Not native. This is a hybrid azalea developed from Asian evergreen azalea species.

Sun exposure:
Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Increased sun exposure supports stronger reblooming and fuller growth.

Water requirements:
Moderate. Performs best in evenly moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Avoid standing water, which can lead to root disease.

Pests and problems:
May be affected by azalea lace bugs, spider mites, root rot in poorly drained soils, and nutrient deficiencies when grown in alkaline conditions. Proper soil pH and drainage help prevent most issues.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Exhibits good heat tolerance and maintains foliage quality under higher light levels compared to traditional azaleas.

Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to approximately -10°F once established, with reliable performance across its recommended growing range.

Growing tips:
Plant in acidic soil enriched with organic matter to improve drainage and root health. Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from the stem. Water consistently during the establishment period and during extended dry spells. Prune only if needed and do so immediately after the primary spring bloom to avoid reducing future flowering. Apply an azalea-specific fertilizer to support deep foliage color and consistent reblooming.
