Encore® Azalea Autumn Embers® PP#10581
Scientific name: Rhododendron ‘Embers’
Encore® Azalea Autumn Embers® is a reblooming evergreen azalea known for its fiery flower color, compact habit, and dependable multi-season performance. Developed as part of the Encore® series, this cultivar offers extended bloom cycles and improved tolerance to sun exposure compared to traditional azaleas.
Plant description:
Embers® forms a dense, rounded shrub with strong branching and a uniform growth pattern. Its manageable size and naturally tidy shape make it easy to use in both formal and informal landscape designs.
Flower description:
Flowers are vivid red to red-orange with warm undertones that intensify in brighter light. A heavy spring bloom is followed by repeat flowering in summer and fall, providing sustained color when most azaleas are no longer in bloom. The bold coloration creates strong contrast against surrounding greenery.
Leaf description:
Foliage is glossy, deep green, and evergreen, maintaining year-round structure and visual weight in the landscape. New growth emerges lighter green before hardening off to a darker, polished finish.
Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen.
USDA grow zones:
Zones 7–10.
Mature height and width:
Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide.
Landscape uses:
Suitable for foundation plantings, low hedges, mass plantings, mixed shrub borders, accent plantings, and large containers. Its strong color makes it effective as a focal point or repeated throughout a design for visual continuity.
Native range:
Not native. This is a hybrid azalea developed from Asian evergreen azalea species.
Sun exposure:
Grows well in full sun to partial shade. Increased sun exposure supports stronger reblooming and deeper flower color.
Water requirements:
Moderate. Performs best in evenly moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Consistent moisture is especially important during establishment and extended dry periods.
Pests and problems:
May experience azalea lace bugs, spider mites, and root rot in poorly drained soils. Nutrient deficiencies can occur in alkaline conditions. Proper soil preparation and drainage help prevent most issues.
Heat and sun tolerance:
Exhibits good heat tolerance and maintains foliage quality in higher light levels compared to traditional azaleas.
Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to approximately -10°F once established, with reliable performance across its recommended growing range.
Growing tips:
Plant in acidic soil amended with organic matter to improve drainage and root health. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperatures, keeping mulch away from direct contact with the stem. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep rooting. If pruning is needed, do so immediately after the main spring bloom to avoid reducing future flower cycles. Use a fertilizer formulated for azaleas to maintain rich foliage color and support repeat blooming.
