Azalea, Encore® Autumn Coral® PP# 10568

Encore® Azalea Autumn Coral® PP#10568

Scientific name: Rhododendron ‘Coral’

Encore® Azalea Autumn Coral® is a reblooming evergreen azalea valued for its vibrant flower color, compact growth, and extended seasonal performance. Developed within the Encore® series, this cultivar delivers multiple bloom cycles and stronger sun tolerance than traditional azaleas, making it a dependable choice for long-lasting color.

Plant description:
Coral® grows as a dense, well-branched shrub with a naturally rounded form. Its controlled size and consistent structure allow it to fit easily into a wide range of landscape designs without frequent pruning.

Flower description:
Blooms are bright coral to salmon-pink with a soft sheen that intensifies in full sun. Flowers appear in a heavy spring display, followed by repeat blooms in summer and fall. The warm color stands out in mixed plantings and remains visually strong across multiple seasons.

Leaf description:
Leaves are glossy, dark green, and evergreen, providing year-round structure and contrast. New foliage emerges lighter green before maturing into a rich, polished finish.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 7–10.

Mature height and width:
Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide.

Landscape uses:
Effective in foundation plantings, low hedges, mass plantings, mixed shrub borders, and container gardens. Its reblooming habit and saturated flower color make it suitable as a focal plant or as part of a repeating design element.

Native range:
Not native. This hybrid azalea was developed from Asian evergreen azalea species.

Sun exposure:
Performs well in full sun to partial shade. Increased sun exposure promotes heavier reblooming compared to traditional azaleas.

Water requirements:
Moderate. Grows best in consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions, especially during cooler seasons.

Pests and problems:
Common concerns include azalea lace bugs, spider mites, root rot in poorly drained soils, and chlorosis caused by high soil pH. Healthy soil conditions and proper irrigation reduce pest pressure.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Demonstrates good heat tolerance and maintains foliage quality under higher light levels, making it adaptable to brighter landscape settings.

Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to approximately -10°F once established, with reliable performance throughout its recommended growing zones.

Growing tips:
Choose a planting site with acidic, organic-rich soil and excellent drainage. Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature while keeping mulch off the stem base. Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. Prune lightly, if necessary, immediately after the main spring bloom to maintain shape without sacrificing future flowers. Apply an azalea-specific fertilizer as needed to support strong growth, deep foliage color, and consistent reblooming.
