Azalea, Encore® Autumn Angel® PP# 15227

Encore® Azalea Autumn Angel® PP#15227

Scientific name: Rhododendron ‘Autumn Angel’

Encore® Azalea Autumn Angel® is an evergreen reblooming azalea selected for strong garden performance, clean foliage, and reliable flowering across multiple seasons. Bred as part of the Encore® series, this cultivar was developed to deliver improved sun tolerance and repeat blooms while maintaining the refined look of traditional azaleas.

Plant description:
Autumn Angel® forms a dense, naturally rounded shrub with a tidy growth habit that requires little shaping. Its compact structure makes it easy to integrate into residential landscapes while still providing strong visual presence through much of the year.

Flower description:
Large, crisp white blooms appear in heavy spring flushes, followed by additional bloom cycles in summer and fall. Flowers are showy and luminous, standing out against the dark foliage and pairing easily with any color palette in the landscape. The reblooming habit significantly extends seasonal interest compared to standard azaleas.

Leaf description:
Leaves are glossy, dark green, and leathery, creating a polished appearance year-round. New growth emerges fresh and vibrant before maturing into a deep green backdrop for the white flowers.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Evergreen.

USDA grow zones:
Zones 7–10.

Mature height and width:
Approximately 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide.

Landscape uses:
Ideal for foundation plantings, low hedges, mixed shrub borders, entryway accents, and mass plantings. Its controlled size works well in smaller gardens, while its reblooming habit adds long-term value to larger landscapes. Also suitable for large containers with proper drainage.

Native range:
Not native. Encore® azaleas are hybrid cultivars developed from Asian evergreen azalea species.

Sun exposure:
Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Increased sun exposure promotes heavier reblooming compared to traditional azaleas.

Water requirements:
Moderate water needs. Prefers consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Avoid prolonged saturation, especially in heavy soils.

Pests and problems:
Potential issues include azalea lace bugs, spider mites, root rot in poorly drained soils, and iron chlorosis in alkaline conditions. Good air circulation, proper soil pH, and consistent watering reduce most problems.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Exhibits strong heat tolerance and handles higher sun exposure better than many traditional azaleas, making it suitable for brighter landscape locations.

Cold tolerance:
Cold hardy to approximately -10°F when established, with reliable performance across its recommended growing zones.

Growing tips:
Plant in acidic, organic-rich soil with excellent drainage. Apply mulch to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture while keeping mulch away from the trunk. Morning sun with light afternoon shade is ideal in hotter climates, while fuller sun can be used in cooler regions to enhance reblooming. Light pruning, if needed, should be done immediately after the main spring bloom to preserve future flower cycles. Regular feeding with an azalea-specific fertilizer supports healthy foliage color and repeat flowering.
