Ageratum Artist Blue

Ageratum Artist Blue

Plant name: Ageratum Artist Blue

Scientific name: Ageratum houstonianum ‘Artist Blue’

Plant description:
Ageratum Artist Blue is a compact, free-flowering annual selected for its strong branching habit and consistent bloom performance. This improved cultivar forms a tidy mound covered in soft blue flowers that hold color well through the growing season. It performs reliably in containers and landscape beds, offering steady color without excessive stretching.

Flower description:
Clusters of fuzzy, thread-like flowers create rounded blooms in a rich blue tone. The flowers sit just above the foliage on sturdy stems and appear continuously from late spring until frost in most climates. Blooms attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees.

Leaf description:
Leaves are medium green, slightly textured, and ovate with soft serrated edges. Foliage remains dense and compact, providing a clean backdrop to the flower clusters.

Deciduous or evergreen:
Warm-season annual.

USDA grow zones:
Grown as an annual in Zones 2–11.

Mature height and width:
8–12 inches tall and 10–14 inches wide.

Landscape uses:
Suitable for borders, edging, mass plantings, patio containers, and mixed flower beds. Works well as a filler plant in combination planters and provides a consistent blue accent in seasonal color schemes.

Native range:
The species Ageratum houstonianum is native to Mexico and Central America. ‘Artist Blue’ is a cultivated hybrid selection.

Sun exposure:
Full sun to partial sun. Best flowering occurs with at least 6 hours of direct light daily. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade can help maintain plant vigor.

Water requirements:
Prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Water consistently during active growth, especially in containers. Avoid prolonged drought stress and waterlogged soil.

Pests and problems:
May be susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Powdery mildew can occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Proper spacing and airflow reduce disease risk.

Heat and sun tolerance:
Tolerates summer heat when provided regular moisture. Flowering may slow during extreme heat but typically resumes as temperatures moderate.

Cold tolerance:
Sensitive to frost. Growth declines as temperatures drop, and plants are killed by freezing conditions.

Growing tips:
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil to support steady bloom production. Lightly shear after an early flush of flowers to encourage renewed flowering and maintain a compact form. Apply a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to promote continuous blooms without excessive leaf growth. Space plants properly to maintain airflow and reduce the risk of foliar disease.
