Streptocarpella 'Concord Blue'

Plant Description

Streptocarpella saxorum 'Concord Blue', commonly known as Concord Blue Cape Primrose, is a trailing, compact perennial with fuzzy, deep green leaves and stunning, violet-blue, trumpet-shaped flowers with a yellow throat. Concord Blue blooms profusely from spring to fall and is an excellent choice for hanging baskets, containers, or as an understory plant in shaded gardens. Concord Blue is related to African violets and shares their preference for warm, humid conditions.

Native Range

Native to East Africa, particularly Tanzania and Kenya, where it grows in shaded, rocky environments.

USDA Hardiness Zones

Zones: 9–11 (Can be grown as an annual or indoor plant in cooler climates)

Size

Height: 12–18 inches tall
Width: 18–24 inches wide (trailing/spreading habit)

Light Requirements

Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Can tolerate some morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon light. Indoors, place near a bright window but avoid direct exposure.

Soil Requirements

Requires well-draining, loose, organic-rich soil. A mix similar to African violet soil, with peat moss, perlite, and compost, is ideal. Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).

Watering Needs

Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid getting water on the fuzzy leaves, as this can cause spotting or fungal issues.

Humidity & Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Sensitive to cold and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Loves high humidity—mist occasionally or place near a humidity tray indoors.

Fertilization

Feed every 2–4 weeks with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or 20-20-20) during the growing season (spring to fall). Reduce feeding in winter.

Propagation

Easily propagated by stem cuttings in water or moist soil. Snip a 3–4 inch stem section, remove lower leaves, and place in water or soil until roots develop.

Uses

Hanging Baskets & Containers: Cascading flowers make it an excellent choice for patio pots and indoor displays.

Shaded Garden Beds: Works well as a border or filler in part-shade gardens.

Houseplant: Thrives indoors with bright, indirect light and high humidity.

Pollinator-Friendly Plant: Attracts bees and butterflies.

Pest & Disease Management

Watch for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies—treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Root rot can occur if overwatered—ensure proper drainage.
Fungal leaf spots may develop in humid conditions—avoid overhead watering
