Sweet Viburnum

Sweet Viburnum (Viburnum odoratissimum) Growing Guide

Plant Description:
Sweet Viburnum is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree known for its dense, glossy green foliage and clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that bloom in spring. The blooms are followed by red to black berries that attract birds. Its thick, full growth habit makes it ideal for screening and hedging.

Grow Zone:
Perennial in USDA Zones 8–10.

Height and Width:
Typically grows 12–20 feet tall and 8–15 feet wide, but can be maintained at smaller sizes with regular pruning.

Uses:
Widely used as a privacy hedge, windbreak, or background plant in landscapes due to its dense growth and fast growth rate. Can also be grown as a specimen shrub or trained into a small ornamental tree. Its fragrant flowers make it suitable for areas near patios or entryways where the scent can be appreciated.

Native Range:
Native to Asia, including regions of China, Japan, and India, where it grows in subtropical to tropical climates.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the densest growth and best flowering occurring in sunnier locations. Prefers well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering, particularly during dry periods. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but grows more vigorously with consistent moisture and occasional feeding.
