Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Fern (Platycerium spp.)

Plant Description:
Staghorn ferns are unique, epiphytic ferns with two types of fronds: basal fronds, which are flat and shield-like, anchoring the plant to its growing surface, and fertile fronds, which are long, forked, and resemble deer antlers. These ferns do not grow in soil, instead absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and debris around them.

Grow Zone:
Can be grown outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 9–12. In cooler climates, they are grown indoors or in greenhouses, as they cannot tolerate frost.

Height and Width:
Size varies by species, but most grow 2–3 feet tall and wide when mature. Larger species and older specimens can reach 4 feet or more in width when mounted or hanging.

Uses:
Primarily used as ornamental plants in tropical and subtropical gardens, mounted on wood, grown in hanging baskets, or displayed as living wall décor. They add a dramatic, sculptural element to indoor and outdoor spaces and thrive in shaded patios, conservatories, and atriums.

Native Range:
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of South America, where they naturally grow attached to trees and rocks in rainforests.

Sun and Water Requirements:
Prefer bright, indirect light or dappled shade, avoiding direct sunlight, which can scorch their fronds. They require high humidity and regular watering, typically by soaking or misting, allowing the mounting medium to dry slightly between waterings. Good air circulation is essential to prevent rot.
