USDA Growing Zones
Perennial in Zones: 8–11
Annual in Zones: 3–7 (can be overwintered by storing rhizomes)
Size (Height & Width)
Height: 30–48 inches
Spread: 18–24 inches
Growing Conditions
Light Requirements: Prefers full sun (6–8 hours daily) for the best flowering. Can tolerate partial sun, but blooms may be reduced.
Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining, and moisture-retentive soil. Ideal pH range: 6.0–6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Watering: Requires consistent moisture but should not sit in standing water. Benefits from mulching to retain soil moisture.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm, humid climates. Sensitive to frost; tubers should be lifted and stored in zones 3–7 before winter.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or 12-4-8) every 2–3 weeks during the growing season. High-phosphorus fertilizer encourages more blooms.
Overwintering: In colder zones, dig up rhizomes after the first frost. Store in peat moss or dry soil at 50°F (10°C) for winter.
Pest & Disease Management:
Common pests: Aphids, spider mites, and caterpillars—treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Diseases: Watch for fungal leaf spots or rust—avoid overhead watering.
Uses in the Landscape & Home
Garden Beds & Borders: Adds a bold, tropical look.
Containers & Patio Planters: Great for small spaces and urban gardens.
Pollinator Gardens: Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.
Water Gardens & Boggy Areas: Can tolerate moist conditions near ponds.
