Calathea "Makoyana"
Calathea "Makoyana"
Plant name: Calathea ‘Makoyana’
Scientific name: Goeppertia makoyana (syn. Calathea makoyana)
Plant description: Calathea ‘Makoyana’, often called the Peacock Plant, is a refined tropical foliage plant known for its intricate leaf markings and graceful form. This clumping perennial grows from underground rhizomes, producing slender stems topped with delicately patterned leaves. Its elegant appearance makes it a popular choice for interior plant collections and shaded garden settings where detailed foliage can be appreciated up close.
Flower description: Flowers are small and understated, typically appearing close to the base of the plant on short stems. The blooms are not the main ornamental feature, as Calathea ‘Makoyana’ is primarily grown for its vividly patterned foliage.
Leaf description: Leaves are thin, oval-shaped, and semi-translucent with feathered dark green markings set against a lighter green background. The undersides often display a soft purple tone, creating contrast when the leaves move or fold at night. Fine veining and layered patterns give the plant a painterly appearance reminiscent of peacock feathers.
Deciduous or evergreen: Evergreen in warm environments and when grown indoors under stable conditions.
USDA grow zones: 10–11 outdoors; commonly cultivated as a houseplant in cooler regions.
Mature height and width: Typically reaches 18–24 inches tall and about 18–24 inches wide, forming a compact, upright clump.
Landscape uses: Well suited for indoor containers, terrariums, humid rooms, and shaded patios. Functions as a focal foliage plant in modern interiors, tropical plant groupings, and layered plant displays where intricate leaf patterns can be highlighted.
Native range: Native to the tropical forests of eastern Brazil.
Sun exposure: Bright, filtered light to partial shade. Direct sun can cause fading, curling, or browning of the delicate leaves.
Water requirements: Prefers consistently moist soil that drains freely. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings while maintaining moderate to high humidity.
Pests and problems: Sensitive to dry air, which may lead to crisp leaf edges or curling. Spider mites, fungus gnats, and mealybugs can appear if humidity is low or airflow is poor. Hard water or excess fertilizer may cause spotting or dull foliage color.
Heat and sun tolerance: Performs best in warm, humid environments with indirect light. Leaves may scorch or lose patterning in intense sun exposure. Cold tolerance: Not frost tolerant; temperatures below 55°F can slow growth and damage foliage.
Growing tips: Use a loose, airy potting mix that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. Position Calathea ‘Makoyana’ in a location with steady humidity and away from cold drafts or heating vents. Water with filtered or room-temperature water to reduce mineral buildup on the leaves. Rotate the container periodically to maintain balanced growth and encourage an even, full shape. Regularly wipe foliage with a soft cloth to keep the intricate patterns vibrant and free from dust.
